Why install solar?

Every now and again we all walk purposefully into the kitchen (and usually open the fridge) only to realise that we have completely lost track of what we came in for… Similarly with our various small home projects, we start with a clear ideal of what we want to achieve but other developments take over and before you know it you’re building a new house with plans manage power network for your local village. It is worth reminding ourselves some of the reasons why people (maybe you!) go for domestic solar installs.

Below are some of the reasons people consider installing domestic solar:

  1. Reduce electricity bills
  2. Earn money (previously through FIT and now SEG)
  3. Use more energy (get an EV) but limit impact on outgoings (use more pay the same)
  4. Mitigate future energy uncertainty
  5. Retirement investment (to remove burden of electricity costs when on low pension income)
  6. To be a green energy consumer and play a part in environment and climate protection
  7. To be independent of the grid and keep operating in a power-cut (in case of zombies and mass outages etc)
  8. Make productive use of roof space (it is usually marginal call between solar and lettuce on this one)
  9. To enjoy the technology and learn how it works
  10. Gain an understanding of how energy grids interface
  11. Provide nation grid frequency response
  12. Help the government achieve security of electricity supply
  13. Find more reasons to spend time in ‘the cave’
  14. Elevate to the upper echelons of moral superiority
